A reality-TV star is born at Weiss hospital

In a first for reality TV and for Weiss Memorial Hospital in Uptown a Chicago woman named Josie, 21, gave birth on the May 6 episode of the daytime series "Starting Over."

A follow-up visit is scheduled to air Thursday, May 13.

"It's a real education for the audience," said Abraham Shashuoa, M.D., chairman of obstetrics and gynecology at Weiss Memorial Hospital and clinical assistant professor at University of Chicago.

The staff at Weiss gave Josie a tour of the hospital so she had a better understanding of the process.

"Communication is key to empowering women with choices about their health," said Mary Schuman, director of the mother/baby unit at Weiss, 4646 N. Marine Drive.

"Starting Over" follows a diverse group of everyday women who want to make extraordinary changes in their lives. The women all live under one roof in Chicago. Two life coaches are available to assist them with the needed steps to reach their goals.

Josie's "Starting Over" debut was April 15. Over the past couple of weeks, she has struggled with whether she should put her child up for adoption after giving birth. Josie explained how she is uncertain of her baby's real father, and as a "love child" herself with unsupportive parents, she's questioning her ability to learn the skills needed to give the child she's carrying a better life. Josie's goal is to have a more stable life.
